Lakeland is home to a large population of royal swans. The swans arrived in Lakeland in 1923, but they were wiped out by illness by 1954. She permitted the city to bring two royal swans; today’s 80 or so are descended from that pair. These graceful birds can be seen swimming in Lake Mirror or resting on the lake’s banks.
